1. Invest in Garden Windows
The greatest challenge indoor gardeners face is a lack of natural sunlight. Garden windows, also known as greenhouse windows, are a fantastic solution to this problem. Built with transparent sides and roofs, garden windows protrude from preexisting window openings, placing the plants they house in direct sunlight. Most garden windows come with one or more shelves for flowerpots and other accessories to sit upon.
2. Monitor the Temperature
Most herbs thrive at room temperature, but some herbs are finicky and have specific temperature requirements. You can use a digital thermometer to monitor the ambient air temperature surrounding your plants. Alternatively, you can use a soil thermometer to measure the temperature of the substrate in which your herbs are planted.
3. Use Big Enough Pots
Small herbs have surprisingly large root systems. Because of this, you must provide your herbs with pots that have room for growth. Use pots that are at least six inches in diameter and six inches in depth. Additionally, to avoid overcrowding, you should plant only one herb per pot.
4. Add Drainage Holes
Most herbs do not thrive when their roots are soaked in excessive amounts of water. Make sure that your pots have drainage holes. If your current pots lack holes, you can use a handheld power drill to make some. To prevent spills and puddles, you should place your pots on saucers or plates. If that is not an option, you can place a pot with drainage holes within a second pot without drainage holes.
